Where the 3,000-mile rule came from
Decades ago, with carbureted engines and simpler oils, 3,000 miles was honest advice. Quick-lube marketing kept the number alive long after oil chemistry moved on. Following it today does no harm to the engine - only to your wallet and to the oil you throw away early.
What modern intervals look like
- Conventional oil: commonly 5,000 to 7,500 miles in normal service.
- Full synthetic: commonly 7,500 to 10,000 miles, with some manufacturers approving more.
- Oil-life monitors: most vehicles since the mid-2000s calculate remaining life from real operating data - revs, temperatures, trip lengths, time. When it says change, change.
Severe service shortens everything
Manuals define a second, shorter schedule for severe service. You are in it more often than you think if your driving includes:
- Mostly short trips where the engine never fully warms up
- Stop-and-go city traffic in heat
- Towing, hauling or roof loads
- Dusty roads or extreme cold snaps
Time counts, not just miles
Oil ages chemically even when parked - moisture condenses, additives deplete. A car driven 2,000 miles a year still needs fresh oil at least every 12 months; many manufacturers say 6 for severe service.
The cheapest engine insurance available: follow the interval in the manual with the grade on the cap, and never stretch a synthetic interval on a conventional-oil fill.
