Every bottle of oil carries a code like 5W-30 or 0W-20. Those characters are the most important thing on the label - and once you can read them, buying oil stops being confusing.
- The W stands for winter, not weight.
- The first number is cold-start flow; lower flows faster on cold mornings.
- The second number is thickness at operating temperature.
- Use the grade printed in your owner's manual or on the oil cap.
Reading the code
SAE viscosity grades describe how an oil flows at two temperatures:
- Before the W - cold behavior. A 0W oil stays fluid in deep cold better than a 10W, so it reaches bearings faster on startup, when most engine wear happens.
- After the dash - the oil's thickness at roughly operating temperature. A 30 runs thinner than a 40 when hot.
So 5W-30 means: behaves like a thin "5" in winter cold, protects like a "30" at full temperature.

Thicker is not safer
A tempting myth says a thicker oil protects better. Modern engines are built with tight clearances sized for thin oils; going thicker slows cold lubrication, costs fuel economy, and can starve narrow passages. The reverse - going thinner than specified - risks a weaker film at temperature. The engineered answer is the grade in your manual.
Can you ever switch grades?
Some manuals list alternatives for extreme climates or high loads - that is the only switch worth making. If your cap says 0W-20, that is the spec your warranty and your bearings expect.
Cold starts cause most engine wear. If you live where winters bite, the low first number matters more to your engine's lifespan than any marketing claim on the front of the bottle.
