Valvoline is the oldest motor oil brand in America - it has been blending engine oil since 1866 - and today its shelf presence spans everything from budget conventional to deposit-cleaning synthetics. This guide maps the current lineup so you can tell which bottle, if any, fits your engine.
- Five main lines: Daily Protection, Advanced Full Synthetic, MaxLife, Extended Protection, and Restore & Protect.
- Current products carry API SP / ILSAC GF-6 certification; select SKUs add GM dexos1 approval.
- MaxLife targets engines past 75,000 miles with seal conditioners.
- As always: the viscosity grade in your owner's manual decides - the brand comes second.
The lineup, line by line
Daily Protection
Valvoline's conventional oil. The budget option for older, low-stress engines on short change intervals. If your car predates modern synthetic requirements and you change on time, it does the job.
Advanced Full Synthetic
The core synthetic line and the one most drivers end up with. Full synthetic base stocks, strong cold-start behavior, and the standard pick for modern engines that specify synthetic. We reviewed the 5W-30 version separately - see the link below.
MaxLife (High Mileage)
Formulated for engines past roughly 75,000 miles: seal conditioners to reduce leaks, extra anti-wear additives, and detergents aimed at older-engine deposits. Available in both synthetic blend and full synthetic versions.
Extended Protection
Valvoline's longer-drain full synthetic, built for drivers who run the upper end of their manufacturer's change interval. It is not a license to ignore the schedule in your manual - severe service still shortens every interval.
Restore & Protect
The newest line, formulated to remove existing piston deposits gradually over successive oil changes rather than just prevent new ones. Aimed at higher-mileage engines and engines with an unknown maintenance history.
Certifications to check on the bottle
Current Valvoline passenger-car oils carry API SP and ILSAC GF-6 marks - the same industry baseline as any current major brand. Select products also carry GM dexos1 approval; if your GM vehicle requires dexos, confirm the dexos logo on the specific bottle, not just the brand name.
How to choose within the brand
- Grade first. Open the owner's manual or check the oil cap - 0W-20, 5W-30, whatever it says wins.
- Engine under 75k miles, synthetic specified: Advanced Full Synthetic.
- Past 75k, seeping seals or oil smell: MaxLife in your grade.
- Unknown history or deposit concerns: Restore & Protect.
- Older engine, tight budget, short intervals: Daily Protection covers it.
Store-brand pricing events matter more than line-jumping: Valvoline's Advanced Full Synthetic on sale routinely beats premium-line list prices while meeting the same API SP baseline your engine actually requires.
